Haumschild — Steve Haumschild for Hawaiʻi State House District 51

Bold. Experienced. Leadership.

Hawaiʻi State House District 51 · Kailua & Waimānalo

“I’m a boots-on-the-ground problem solver, not a career politician. For 25 years I’ve built businesses, created jobs, and tackled real-world challenges. While others talk about problems, I’ve spent my career solving them.”
— Steve Haumschild

The Difference

25 Years Living It, Not Studying It

“My opponents may have studied Hawaiʻi’s challenges. I’ve spent 25 years living them — hiring through them, building through them, and paying for them here in Hawaiʻi. I work with the City and State every day and know the bottleneck issues inside and out.”

More than a decade working inside the legislative process, and 25 years meeting payroll outside of it. Most candidates have only one of those experiences — Steve has both.

Independent thinking. Real solutions matter more than party politics.

Steve’s Priorities

For District 51

Kailua & Waimānalo

01

Grow Hawaiʻi’s Economy & Keep Local Families Here

  • Streamline permitting and reduce unnecessary bureaucracy that delays local businesses, housing, infrastructure, and job creation.
  • Support policies that help local businesses compete, grow, and keep more dollars circulating in our communities.
  • Invest in workforce development, skilled trades, local agriculture, and emerging industries that create good-paying jobs and reduce reliance on imported goods.
  • Create new sources of revenue instead of just raising taxes — growth funds the state without hurting local families.

Why me: The best social program is a good job. For 25+ years I’ve built businesses, created jobs, mentored entrepreneurs, and invested in Hawaiʻi companies.

02

Make Hawaiʻi Affordable for Local Families

  • Support housing solutions that prioritize local residents, working families, and future generations.
  • Streamline regulations and government processes that unnecessarily drive up the cost of housing.
  • Encourage responsible growth that increases housing opportunities while preserving the character of Kailua and Waimānalo.

Why me: Too many local families are being priced out of the communities they love. We didn’t come from wealthy families — we built this ourselves, and it’s time to pave the path for future generations.

03

Supporting Native Hawaiian Communities

  • Address the Native Hawaiian housing crisis by strengthening DHHL, reducing wait times, and accelerating homestead opportunities.
  • Hold the military accountable for protecting Hawaiʻi’s cultural resources, sacred places, land, water, and environment.
  • Expand funding for Hawaiian language immersion and culture-based education that preserves history and traditional knowledge.

Why me: This isn’t a talking point — it’s personal. My wife, Malia, is a Kumu Hula, and our children are Native Hawaiian.

04

Protect Kailua & Waimānalo From Becoming Waikīkī

  • Oppose overdevelopment that strains infrastructure, increases traffic, and overwhelms beaches.
  • Protect public access to beaches, parks, open spaces, and cultural resources.
  • Put residents first — our communities are places to live, work, and raise families, not just places to visit.

Why me: Our communities should be shaped by the people who live here, not by outside interests.

05

Strengthen Community Resilience

  • Improve emergency preparedness so Kailua and Waimānalo are ready for hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, and other disasters before they occur.
  • Support affordable renewable energy and resilient infrastructure that lowers costs.
  • Encourage greater food, water, and energy security.

Why me: From COVID-19 to the Lahaina fires, I’ve worked on the ground to help communities prepare, respond, and recover.

06

Lower the Cost of Living Through Government Efficiency

  • Make government more efficient, transparent, and accountable by reducing waste and cost overruns.
  • Ensure infrastructure keeps pace with growth so roads, schools, utilities, and services serve residents first.
  • Support term limits for elected officials to encourage fresh ideas and accountability.

Why me: Hawaiʻi’s affordability crisis can’t be solved by growing government alone — we need better results, faster, at lower cost.

Family & Community

Rooted in Kailua & Waimānalo

Steve is husband to Kumu Hula Malia Haumschild and father of Native Hawaiian children. Through his family and decades of living and working in this community, he has seen firsthand the importance of preserving Hawaiian culture, protecting Native Hawaiian rights, and ensuring future generations can thrive in Hawaiʻi.

He believes the best days of Kailua, Waimānalo, and Hawaiʻi are still ahead — but only if we have the courage to solve problems, make difficult decisions, and put local families first.

Endurance Athlete, Hawaiʻi Through and Through

Solo Molokaʻi-to-Oʻahu channel crossings by OC1 and stand-up paddleboard, multiple Kaiwi Channel crossings, and an XTERRA World Championship finish. Steve’s connection to Hawaiʻi’s land and ocean runs as deep as his commitment to its people.

I’m not running to manage Hawaiʻi’s decline. I’m running because I believe in its future.

For 25 years, I’ve built businesses, created jobs, responded to disasters, and worked alongside the people who make our communities strong. I know what it takes to get things done because I’ve spent my life doing it.

Let’s build it together.

Let’s talk story! Would you like to meet up and discuss how we can best change for the better?
